DMV Mobile Unit in Evans

DMV Mobile Unit parked in front of the Evans Town Hall

Inside Evans Town Hall, the DMV conducts basic services business.

Erie County is in the middle of a fiscal crisis. Budget cuts are rampant. Lines for County provided services are long and not expected to get any shorter in the near future. Everyone is talking about the “one DMV office” that Erie County has open. No one is mentioning the County’s Mobile DMV Unit. Every Tuesday, until further notice, from 10am to 3pm, the DMV Mobile Unit opens its “traveling show” in a corner of the Town of Evans Tax Department at the Town Hall at 8787 Erie Road, Angola. The Mobile Unit idea was first proposed to the County Legislature by County Clerk David Swarts in 1998.Funded by a State grant, the Mobile Unit originally opened in Evans on July 22, 2003. The objective was “to reach customers in the out-lying communities who find it difficult to get to one of the existing Auto Bureaus. Swarts said that many residents in Evans and beyond now resort to going to Dunkirk in Chautauqua County for DMV services. Whenever residents transact their DMV business in neighboring counties, Erie County loses revenues. The Mobile Unit will keep the fees flowing into Erie County.” And now, more than ever, we need to keep revenues coming into Erie County. Basic DMV services are available, every Tuesday, including: • Drivers’ license and registration renewals and duplicates • Duplicate titles • Plate surrenders • Learners’ permit tests for D License • License abstracts • Non-driver ID cards Evans and neighboring area residents should certainly take advantage of this convenience.

Lake Shore School Board Begins Superintendent Search

The Lake Shore School Board met at a Special Meeting on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 and accepted the resignation of Superintendent Kenneth J. Connolly. They now face the task of finding a new superintendent to lead the district. This task is one of the most important—and most difficult—tasks for a school board. A typical superintendent search takes at least three months to complete. According to NYS Education Law, a Superintendent or interim Superintendent must be in place by midnight, July 1, 2005. Dr. Richard Timbs, District Superintendent of E2CC BOCES, addressed the School Board concerning the service he and the BOCES could provide for the Board in their search for a new superintendent, a service similar to what could be provided by an outside “headhunter” organization. The BOCES service would cost the Lake Shore District the actual costs for printed materials, mailings and the costs of bringing the candidates to the District for interviewing. A headhunter service would cost between $9,000 and $20,000. A typical superintendent search requires the Board to develop selection criteria; to answer the question “What are we looking for?” Candidates for the position can come from within the District and/or from outside the District. The District used a headhunter service when they did the Superintendent Search at the time Superintendent Bill Houston retired. There is only one current Board member who was on the Board during that search process. During the meeting, the Board listened to remarks and questions from the audience present for the meeting. Bob Barrett encouraged the Board to go through the Superintendent Search Process so that they would know that the best candidate available would be hired to lead the District. Several people asked if they would be able to express their thoughts on who would be best to fill the position of Superintendent. They were asked not to mention names, at this time, because of confidentiality issues especially since candidate qualifications have not yet been determined. After adjourning the meeting to go into Executive Session to discuss personnel matters relating to the Superintendent Search, the Board returned and reported that no action was taken but discussion was started concerning the next steps to take in the Search and that Dr. Timbs was going to get back to them with the answers to the questions discussed in the Executive session.
