Caboose Arrives in Angola
The long awaited "old railroad caboose" arrived on Friday, April 21, in Angola. Many residents gathered at the site on Main Street in the village to welcome the railroad artifact. The caboose was delivered on a warm and sunny day while it was a cold Saturday in March that members of the Angola Nickel Plate Depot Preservation Society and volunteers assembled the panel of approximately 40 feet of track where the caboose would be placed under the direction of "track superintendent", William Houston and "section gang leader" Caryl Youngers. A crew from Winters Rigging, Inc. of North Collins brought the caboose in on two large trucks and placed it on the prepared section of track located on the vacant lot owned by Gina Lachowski of Twisters. According to Caryl Youngers, it took the Winters’ crew approximately 1˝ hours to unload the 34-foot long, 15-foot high, 30-ton caboose and place it on the rails. Mr. Youngers coordinated the relocation of the caboose from a siding in Arcade to its final destination in Angola. Many residents were affectionately referring to the old caboose as "Rosie" due to its faded red paint. Volunteers will soon begin restoration of the Erie Railroad car and transform it into the bright red and white paint scheme of the Nickel Plate Railroad. According to Becky Leone and Carm Scirri, co-treasurers of the Society volunteers are always welcome to assist with the renovation. They also indicated that donations for the caboose project as well as the future depot restoration can be mailed to the "Angola Nickel Plate Depot Preservation Society, P.O. Box 262, Angola, New York, 14006. Members of the "track work crew" included: Chris Thomas, Becky Leone, Mitchell Stockman, Cass Culotta. Back Row: Ryan Youngers, Caryl Youngers, Mike Stockman, John Wilson, Joe Pisarski, Giff Swyers, William Houston, Jim Dinkuhn, Jon Dinkuhn, Kati Dinkuhn and Kelly Carlson.
