On Thursday, June 15, Lake Shore Middle School students and staffmembers planted a LiveStrong garden to commemorate their ongoing dedication and commitment to the LiveSirong character education program. Students and faculty hope that by planting this garden, everyone who visits the school can appreciate the beauty and commitment it shows towards our school and good character education. This program, adopted two years ago from the Lance Armstrong Foundation mantra, has taught students that to live strong is to live their lives with courage, compassion, hope, and perseverance. It was the hope of faculty that students would be able to understand that one person can make a difference through doing good deeds and becoming responsible young adults. Through character education-themed days as well as the incorporation of this program into the classroom, the middle school is becoming a more positive place for students and faculty alike. Students on Team Mystery began fundraising for the garden last year with a bake sale during lunches. Students on other teams throughout the school came together to support this effort by bringing baked goods to sell. Each grade level as well as other groups have played essential parts of malcing LiveStrong a success at the middle school. The LiveStrong program was very fortunate to have various materials donated for the garden. Schreiber Winkelman, Inc. (East Eden, NY) generously donated topsoil and mulch, Turnbull Nursery and Garden Center (North Collins, NY) helped students save an enormous amount of money on the purchase of plants and trees, and Gematt Asphalt and Family, Inc. (Collins. NY) donated decorative rocks to be used in the garden. The Lake Shore Middle School PTA also donated funds to aid in this beautification effort.
