What a Difference a Day Makes! Winter Hits with a Vengence
Pictured above: Village of Angola’s sidewalk snowblower working at clearing the snow in the business district. With the warm weather we had this winter, Lake Erie remained an open body of water into February. Then on Super Bowl weekend, Saturday and Sunday, February 3 and 4, 2007, a “super” blast of Arctic cold swept across the lake forming a band of snow that dumped on a narrow area of Western New York that included Evans, Brant and neighboring towns and villages. The snow began Saturday evening and lasted until approximately 7pm on Sunday. Snowfall totals reportedly ranged between 18 and 30 inches. Along with the snow, the frigid air mass never allowed the temperature to rise higher than the teens with wind chill temperatures below zero. Numerous cars were stuck in the deep snow or in snow banks that drivers turned into during the white-out conditions. Because of the frigid temperatures, the road salt was not able to penetrate the layer of ice that was on the roads beneath the snow causing some motorists to end up in the ditches along the road. Tow trucks were in high demand causing motorists extended wait times for help to arrive. Travel advisories were issued for the Towns of Evans, Brant, Eden, North Collins and Hamburg. A travel ban was issued in the Village of Angola. With the weather forcast calling for continued bitter temperatures, extreme wind chills and lake effect snow, area schools (and some businesses) began issuing closing notices on Sunday evening. There is no doubt winter is here! Punxetany Phil predicted an early Spring but it looks like Dunkirk Dave who predicted we would have 6 more weeks of winter may be the better prognasticator. Let’s just hope it isn’t six more weeks of winter weather like this past weekend! The Library is closed on Sundays and Wednesdays. Statement By Senator Catharine M. Young 2007-08 Executive Budget My focus is entirely on doing what is right for my district. The impact of the Governor’s proposal on our region has to be carefully analyzed. I’m reaching out to my hospitals, nursing homes and schools to get their input. We need significant relief from the property taxes that are suffocating our overburdened taxpayers. Governor Spitzer’s proposal must be reviewed to see if it gives enough tax relief. I personally had spoken with the Governor about the need to fund Routes 219 and I-86 and I was pleased to hear him mention both roadways in his budget address. These infrastructure improvements are crucial to our economy and growing more jobs. Our work is cut out for us. We need to dive in, roll up our sleeves and get to work for not only residents of the 57th Senate District, but all New Yorkers.
