Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held for Old Lakeshore Bridge Project

Erie County Legislator Robert Reynolds and Town of Evans Deputy Supervisor Karen Erickson officiated at the ribbon cutting of the new Old Lakeshore Road Bridge over Delaware Creek at Lake Street that signaled the official opening on Wednesday, September 26.

The bridge and surrounding roads were entirely rebuilt with a cost of $1.2 million; in addition to this work, the construction included a project for new sewers in this section at a cost of $300,000. The project consisted of three elements; bridge replacement, highway improvements and sanitary sewer force main installation. The funding for the project included more than half coming from the federal government and less than half from the county.

The bridge was built with pre-cast concrete arch units at a span of 42 feet. Flared wing walls and rip-rap was constructed to prevent future erosions. Bridge rail with a bike rail was installed to facilitate future bike path use.

The highway section includes 1,200 feet of widened pavement with 11-foot travel lanes, 6-foot paved shoulders and 3-foot wide concrete gutters. The intersection of Lake Shore Road and Lake Street was realigned from a "Y" with a one-way stop to an intersection with stops in all directions to improve the safe operation of the intersection. The force main improvements consist of 1,000 feet of 20-inch pipe and 500 feet of 24- inch pipe to improve the future sanitary system in the area.

Angola and Evans Police Forces Officially Merge

The Town of Evans and the Village of Angola are proud to announce that the Town of Evans will begin providing Police Service to the Village of Angola on Monday, October 1, 2007.

Supervisor Catalino stated "the Town of Evans Police Department will continue to provide the exemplary police service that Village residents have become accustomed to, with some important enhancements such as a fully trained detective bureau. There will be a seamless transition and Village residents will be pleased with the results."

As part of this arrangement, the Town has agreed to hire the 3 full-time officers that previously worked for the Village Police Department. They will begin their new careers as Evans Police officers on October 1, 2007.

Mayor Hub Frawley said, "I think that the Town’s decision to hire our three officers is really what finally sold this proposal to our community. This is a win-win that results in all our residents receiving tremendous service for less money! The members of both the Village and the Town board should be applauded for the hard work put in to get this done. That’s what happens when people work together for the common good."

On August 20, 2007 the Village Board of the Village of Angola voted unanimously to adopt a local law to abolish their Police Department. Pursuant to New York State Law, this action was subject to a permissive referendum that required a 30-day waiting period. . That 30-day period has passed with no formal objection. The Evans Police Department wi1l now provide police service to the entire Town of Evans, including the Village of Angola, pursuant to New York State Law.

The Evans Police Department currently operates an "East" and "West" zone with at least one police unit patrolling each area. They will be adding a third zone, the "village zone," to their coverage area that will also have its own dedicated unit.
